Masters Competitive is designed for experienced Masters rowers, both sweep and scull, who have maintained baseline fitness.  Participants will compete (see regatta listings) in Virginia and elsewhere. An experienced RRC Coach oversees practices and competitions.

If you have questions after reading the details below, please see the Competitive Program Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).

This 2018 season, rowers interested in training for races can take advantage of these coached programs:

Spring Training

“Spring Training” is a 4-week program designed to get rowers back on the water early in the season. Focus will be on renewing technical skills and building fitness levels. Both sweep and scull boats will be used.

Summer Competitive Rowing

“Competitive Rowing” is designed for experienced rowers, both sweep and scull, who have maintained baseline fitness during the Winter and Spring. This program places greater emphasis on racing and team performance, with competition anticipated in at least two, but likely three, regattas during the Summer. The competitive sessions will focus on race preparation and will be more intense than the Masters Open sessions. Boats will be selected primarily on merit and competitive ability with some testing used to measure improvement. Focus will be placed on athletes’ competency in all aspects of the sport, i.e., port/starboard and crew scull/single scull.  Competitive rowers are expected to train on- and off-water 5-6 times per week. Hence, beyond the three sessions specific to “Competitive Rowing”, rowers can workout with any (AM or PM) scheduled “Masters Open” session, at no additional cost.

Fall Head Race Training

Designed for experienced Masters rowers, both sweep and scull, who have maintained baseline fitness during the summer and can commit to the fall head race season.  Participants will have the opportunity to compete in multiple races where feasible.  As the Fall progresses, start time on Tuesday/Thursday may shift to 5:30pm to catch the shorter daylight.
