Learn to Row (Adult)

Rivanna_Rowing_Learn_to_RowLearn to Row (LTR)
is designed for those with little or no rowing experience who would like to learn the basics of sweep rowing and sculling. Participants learn about safety, boat parts and terms, and the physical fitness relevant to rowing.

Participants start out learning the correct form on a rowing machine (ashore), then move into a very stable 16-person barge designed for sweep training. LTR students then proceed to 90–120 minute, on-the-water practices in actual 4+’s and 8+’s (4 or 8 rowers plus a coxswain) in sweep rowing shells.

At least one experienced RRC Coach in a launch (motorboat) oversees practices to motivate and advise on technique.

New in 2018: in contrast to previous years, 2018 will expose first-time learners to both sweep (1 oar) and scull (2 oars) rowing, with the expectation that understanding both styles will help reinforce proper rowing form. Please sign up for the newsletter to be notified about future program updates (registrations open 3/25).
